The seed for Redbud Publishing was first nurtured within the “Caston Creek Chronicles” column by Sylvia Tomlinson (pen name: La Femme Chevre) of the Goat Rancher Magazine . Dubbed the ‘soul of the Goat Rancher' and warmly received by readers nationwide, Sylvia's how-to observations, anecdotal wisdom and rural philosophy was later published in 1999 as The Meat Goats of Caston Creek , which became Redbud Publishing's first title.
Encouraged by the success of The Meat Goats of Caston Creek, Sylvia followed with a juvenile fiction called Maddie, which continues to be a popular gift for young readers ages 9-12 years.
Sylvia's writings continued to be influenced by her agrarian experiences and in 2003 when she saw the devastation wrecked on unsuspecting farmers by an unethical poultry company in her own community, she wrote
Plucked and Burned . During the course of her preliminary research for writing a book that she believed was based on an unusual, localized situation, she learned that the same abuses exist nationwide. Contract poultry farmers in the South are often called the “last slaves to be freed” and Sylvia set about to tell their story. She also learned about the use of arsenic in raising chickens and the toxic effect it has on people. Sylvia did a book tour that year and appeared on television including the Fox affiliate “Good Morning, Alabama.”
After the release of Plucked and Burned, Sylvia began to receive manuscripts from other authors. Redbud Publishing is looking forward to continued growth.
